Course of Chemistry

Some years ago, a question occasionally heard was “Whystudy chemistry?”— but no longer. At the core of the naturalsciences, chemistry is crucial to an understanding of molecularbiology, genetics, pharmacology, ecology, atmospheric science, nuclear studies, materials science, and numerous otherfields. Because chemistry is so central to understanding thesefields, it is a core requirement for an increasing number of academic majors. Clearly, the study of chemistry as an integral part of our world is essential. To respond to numerous modern challenges, chemistryis evolving in new directions to design “greener” plasticsand fuels, monitor atmosphere and oceans to model globalwarming, determine our genetic makeup to treat disease, and synthesize nanomaterials with revolutionary properties, among many others.Nevertheless, as the applications change, the basic concepts of chemistry still form the essence of the course. Chemistry deals withall materials, it is a subject of enormous breadth. It would be difficult to exaggeratethe influence of chemistry on modern science and technology or on our ideas aboutour planet and the universe.

Course Objective: The objectives of Chemistry course are as follows: (i) Systematic and coherent understanding of the fundamental concepts in Physical chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and all other related allied chemistry fields. (ii) To understand atomic theory of matter, composition of atom. (iii) Physical and chemical characteristics of elements in various groups and periods according to ionic size, charge, etc. and position in periodic table. (iv) Characterize bonding between atoms, molecules, interaction and energetics. (v) Understanding the concept of kinetics and thermodynamics involved with matter and change that matter undergo.
