Journalism faculties at Dhaka Media Summit 2023

Educators of Journalism and Media Studies, Port City International University(PCIU), presented three research papers on Film at the Dhaka Media Summit 2023. Focusing on the theme ‘Reshaping Cinema Narratives’, the summit was organized by the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh(ULAB) in collaboration with the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) on October 13–14, 2023, at the ULAB Research Building, Dhaka.

Ms. Dilruba Akter, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Taslima Akter Erin, Lecturer, presented a paper on “(Re)Searching Women Identity in Zahir Raihan’s Films”, while Mr. Prashanta Kumar Shill, Senior Lecturer, presented a paper on “Movie Selection Preference on Audience in Bangladesh”, and Mr. AquibUlWadud Alam, Lecturer, submitted a paper on “Preference of French Films among the French Learners at Alliance Francaise Chittagong” at the summit. Besides, Mr. Zahid Hossain, graduate student from the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), worked as co-author of the paper on women representation with the team.

In addition, 59 research papers, 3 roundtable discussions, and 4 master classes on film were presented during the summit (hybrid mode), where media educators, filmmakers, media professionals, and students from 14 countries (including Bangladesh, India, Australia, Egypt, Indonesia, Sweden, Afghanistan, Zambia, the Philippines, Tunisia, etc.) participated.

Expressing her thoughts on the summit, Ms. Dilruba Akter, Assistant Professor, said, “Film is a powerful medium for the diffusion of messages regarding social problems, innovate strategies to overcome those barriers and entertain the audiences”. The summit could serve as a vibrant forum for researchers and filmmakers to discuss the entertainment sector and develop perceptions of our film industry globally.

By emphasizing on the teaching development and research, Port City International University and the Department of Journalism and Media Studies are committed to delivering quality education. They intend to continue to collaborate together with other institutions to strengthen Bangladesh's educational system.
